Sir Bob Geldof Featured on Tom Needham’s The Sounds of Film

Legendary musician/activist Bob Geldof is Tom Needham’s exclusive guest this Thursday at 6pm on WUSB’s The Sounds of Film.


Sir Bob Geldof will be Tom Needham’s special guest this Thursday on WUSB’s ‘The Sounds of Film.’ They will be discussing Geldof’s acclaimed film, ‘A Fanatic Heart: Bob Geldof On W.B. Yeats.’ The critically acclaimed documentary is now available as a special 2 DVD/CD set that features exclusive bonus music, readings and commentary.

‘A Fanatic Heart: Bob Geldof On W.B. Yeats’ examines the life of one of the 20th century’s greatest poets, William Butler Yeats. The film tells the amazing story of revolution, nation-birth, and mythology. It demonstrates how one genius helped a nation transform from the ravages of poverty and famine into a modern state.

Written by Bob Geldof and biographer Roy Foster, the movie features readings by notable celebrities including Sting, Noel Gallagher, Elvis Costello, Bono, Van Morrison, Stephen Fry, Liam Neeson and Collin Farrell. The DVD/CD set includes over two hours of additional commentaries and readings by dozens of celebrities. It also features two songs based on Yeats’ poems performed by Bono and Elvis Costello. Tom Needham’s The Sounds of Film will be highlighting music and poetry from the film on the show.

Sir Bob Geldof is an internationally recognized singer-songwriter, activist, actor and writer. He is widely known as the lead singer of The Boomtown Rats. He is the co-writer of the classic “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” The holiday song is one of the best-selling singles of all time. In 1984, he and Mitch Ure founded the charity supergroup Band Aid and produced the historic Live Aid concert to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia. In addition, he is remembered for being the star of Pink Floyd’s film ‘Pink Floyd – The Wall.’ Geldof has been appointed an honorary knight and is a recipient of the Man of Peace title.
