Byeong Woo Lee will be talking about his upcoming Town Hall Concert. The Town Hall is featuring the New York debut of Byeong Woo Lee in a specially curated musical “double feature” on Saturday, April 20th at 7pm. The program will feature the first New York City concert by the innovative Korean guitarist and composer, followed by a full-length score of Bong Joon Ho’s 2009 film, “Mother,” one of a series of memorable scores Lee created for the director. For both presentations, Lee will be joined by an orchestra assembled from members of The Harlem Chamber Players, conducted by Pulitzer Prize-winning artist Tania León.
Byeong Woo Lee, composer and guitarist, is mostly known for his compositions in emotive Korean film music, such as A Tale of Two Sisters, Mother, and The Host that have captured hearts in Korea and beyond. As an educator, innovator, and performer, Lee’s journey has been characterized by continuous evolution and a relentless pursuit of excellence, earning him a reputation as an “artist’s artist”. Known for his role as the music director for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and as an icon of unique Korean film music. Lee designs the guitars he uses and is always experimenting with the future of the instrument. His work includes original compositions from six albums and a range that spans classical guitar pieces to modern music, in solo performances and collaborations with orchestras.
The celebrated South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho is best known for his Academy Award and Palme d’Or-winning film Parasite, but perhaps his most critically acclaimed movie to date is the 2009 film noir, Mother. The taut thriller tells the story of a woman obsessed with finding the true killer behind the murder for which her son stands accused. Fans of Joon-Ho’s later work will recognize the master’s touch in the film’s dark humor, careful pacing, and beautifully framed images.
Joining Beyeong Woo Lee on the SOUNDS OF FILM is his mentor, Julian Gray.
